Olga “Toni” Nelson Art Scholarship
The SMAA Board of Directors recently renamed our annual student scholarship after Toni Nelson, one of our long time dedicated volunteers and a renowned watercolorist. In recognition of her many years of teaching watercolor and her support of the association the scholarship was renamed the OLGA 'TONI' NELSON ART SCHOLARSHIP.
A luncheon held in her honor helped raise money for the 2014 scholarship to be presented this spring. The luncheon was well attended and a total surprise to Toni. Her children were in attendance to help celebrate this honor with her. Over the many years Toni has held her classes in her studio, she constantly endeavors to excite budding artists into the world of watercolor painting. Marti Green, a former student, generously donated a framed print of our Sidney gallery building for a raffle to raise more money for the scholarship fund. The lunch was catered by Home Made Cafe. Suanne Martin Smith and her crew served sandwiches, salads and desserts that everyone enjoyed.
The scholarship is given to a graduating South Kitsap area student to support their endeavor in the world of art. This scholarship fund is supported by donations, raffles and fund raisers. In alternating years, the Heritage Quilt raffle is used to fund this scholarship. A new heritage quilt is planned for 2015. If you want to be a part of this project contact Mary Peterson, or you can attend a class March 10, Monday, 6 pm to 7:30 pm. Mary Peterson and Dana Harmon will be teaching the art of NEEDLE TURN APPLIQUE. Mary is getting started on the Heritage Quilt. The quilt will be used to raise money for our Olga 'Toni' Nelson Art Scholarship. It takes about one year to make this quilt so it will not be raffled off until 2015. All materials will be supplied. You do need to have some sewing experience, but don't worry she will get you started and ex-cited to complete one of the blocks we need to complete this quilt. There is no fee for this class.
