Dear Anna, How I wish you were here to share in our summer activities now that the sun has finally begun to shine. We've had such a cold, rainy May and June that our garden has produced only cold weather vegetables; cabbage and broccoli, until I don't want to see either ever again. We've eaten cabbage in every way imaginable and were doing the same with broccoli until Teddy discovered a worm in his portion and the children’s tolerance
What can I say about our volunteers? Well they rock! SMAA has had the best volunteers any organization could ever want. They are all friendly, willing to work, agreeable and just downright nice to work with. SMAA operates with one paid part-time emplyee and many volunteers. We are always looking for others to join us, so if this sounds like you, give us a call and we'll find a place for you.
The Sidney Historical Museum, 202 Sidney Avenue, Port Orchard, is open Tuesday through Saturday, 11-4 and Sunday, 1-4. It is closed on Monday. The museum was originally a Masonic Lodge, built in 1908 and still features much of the original decor. The museum now features staged vingettes of old Port Orchard,including a doctor's office, a hardware store, a mercantile and a school room and many historic photos of people, places and events in and around South Kitsap. At the Log Cabin Museum at 416 Sidney Avenue in Port Orchard we'll be focusing on some minor repairs this year in preparation for seeking National Historic Designation. We're also going to try to repair the player piano, originally housed in the Sidney Hotel, before the fire. The Cabin was built in 1914 and sits on the original site. Because of the roses that are planted in front of the cabin and still thrive, the cabin was referred to as 'The Rose
