Artist Statement: My artist voice has been described as Contemporary Realism. The content of my art is a narrative on today's triumphs, complusive pastimes, daily stress fractures, or close encounters with nature's organic patterns. The concept is a celebration of all that God has created!

I choose bold and vibrant colors that reflect my enthusiasm for life. I use layers of transparent pigments for maximum luminosity. When the painting is almost finished I call upon other tools to enhance the composition, such as: color pencils, pastels, metallic paints, and acrylics.

Some of the subjects call out to be released from the paper and sculpted into the third dimension. I will cut out portions of the paper with a knife and lift the paper, forming it into a particular shape. I don't paste on other papers, as done for collage work, but only sculpt the actual painting.

I tend to paint in series, pushing the boundaries of a subject and creating my own referential symbolism. "Ancient Koi" is one of the series I've been developing, and just about the time I think the series is complete, another internal vision rises to the surface.

Torbenson's work exhibits all over Washington.
